CCC NEWS &VIEWS 7-26-01
By NM Leland Fuerstman

In Memoriam: All CCC members mourn the loss of "chess dad" Terry D. Brown, Esq. 51, who tragically lost his life in a automobile accident on 7-21-01. As President of the CMSCA and volunteer coach for local schools, last yearTerry was instrumental in organizing one of the largest scholastic tournaments in history!  As mentor to his aspiring son Brandon, 14, his friendly face could often be seen at scholastic tournaments around the country. On many occasions, Terry's generosity quietly allowed players who could not pay their own fees to become members and compete. He will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife, Sally, son Brandon and daughter Britany, 8.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.  A beautiful flower arrangement has been provided by the CCC. Funeral Friday, 11:00am at Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Rd.

Wendy's XXVII Commences; Team CCC Gears up for LPO!
Charlotte, NC 7-25-01:Thirty-six of the Charlotte area's most enthusiastic chessplayers forwent watching TV and instead participated in Rd:1 of Wendy's XXVI. In the Top Section for the second time in as many weeks, NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu (2011) was able to repel the counter attack of the CCC's co-#1 player NM Frankie "Neutron Bomb" Newton (2190) to share the point. Meanwhile, the taste of revenge was sweet as NM John "Night-Train" Lane (2095) breached the defenses of David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1864) while CCC Favorite Son 17 year old phenom Master-elect Justin Daniel (2150) rampaged recently crowned Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2001). In addition, NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2027) administered just enough kryptonite to get by mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1808). In the Middle Section, D. Paul Jenkins (1587) upended Paul Lucas (1605), Danesh "the Mad Iranian" Dadgar (1453) proceeded with a hostle takeover against "CEO" Mike Isner (1455), Mike Lipkin (1550) upset Paul "Big Bertha" Calloway (1630) and Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1668) scored against Charles Blackwood (1382). In the Lower Section, wins were registered by Brandi Chaffee, Bhaskar Mookherji, Frank "Chessman" Johnson, Winfred "Windy" Gatlin, Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup, Randy "King" Hunter, Frank Mu and James "Bobby" Fisher. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable."  All welcome new CCC members William Cable and Lawrence Robinson. (We now begin at 7:30pm sharp! LF).  Next Smokehouse Saturday July 21. Be there! (Editor Needs Games; Please E-mail to lelandf@juno.com)

Mouzon Wins Top; F. Mu Lower Section of Smokehouse XVII
Charlotte, NC 7-21-01:
Nineteen weekend warriors participated in Smokehouse XVII. In the Top Section, new CCC addition (and soon to be Master) Harold "Wyn" Mouzon III (2190) outflanked Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2001) in Rd:1 before being slowed by NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2027) who split the point.  In the final round, Mouzon upset leader SM Klaus Pohl (2208) to take clear 1st Place and pocket $100. Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1 were SM Klaus Pohl, NM Leland Fuerstman, Justin Daniel and Jeff Rayfield each winning $12.50. In the Lower Section, Frank Mu (1134) defeated Don Norwood (807), Coy Johnson (950) and Bhaskar Mookherji (925) scoring a perfect 3-0 and taking home $90. Equal 2nd-3rd were Michael Curcuru and Jerome DeBell each pocketing $15. (Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse August 18.  See ya' there!
