CCC NEWS &VIEWS 7-27-00
By NM Leland Fuerstman

Newton! Wins Top; Sinanovic Middle; B. Brown and Tapia Lower Section of Wendy's XVI

A grand total of 50 of the greater Charlotte area's most respected chess competitors decended upon our hallowed temple of thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in order to compete in the ultimate round of Wendy's XVI, a 5 round USCF rated chess tournament.  In the Top Section, the three leaders were routed after NM "WWF" Frankie Newton (2193), who had missed the first two rounds, handily defeated NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) to score 3-0 and take clear first place winning his 9th Wendy's title.  Meanwhile, NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) was upset by Patrick McCartney (1948) while Jon "the Merchant" Pietras (1752)  (See Game 0129) was taken down by returnee from his 6 week vacation, CCC favorite son 16 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2002). In addition, Jeff Rayfield (1836) defeated Michael Curcuru (1772). The curious final round results created a rare "5 way tie" for 2nd Place!  Scoring 2.5-2.5 were NM Leland Fuerstman, NM Daniel Liu, Patrick McCartney, Jon Pietras and (possibly) Gary Newsom.  In the Middle Section, Slobodan Sinanovic (1518) asserted his authority as he maintains a winning edge in his adjournment against Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1475). The win will yield Sinanovic a strong score of 4.5-.5.  Also, in the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1589) perpetrated a mild upset over "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1657) while "C.E.O." Mike Isner (1437) has adjourned against Guillermo Padilla (Unr). In the Lower Section, with the Black pieces, Daniel Tapia (1210) handled Helton Clavijo (1278) while Brandon Brown (1244) did the same to Darrell "Little Kobe" Spencer (1389) allowing each of them to remain undefeated (they drew each other in Rd:1) and finish with the superb score of 4-1. Other Lower Section winners were: Tim Ruffin, newcomer Scott Grimes, Frank Mu, Alphonse Ashamalla and Don Norwood.  All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." All welcome new CCC members Scott Grimes and Freddie Perdue. "Good Luck to all at the LPO" LF

"Honorable Advisors" Recognized
With charter member Paul F. Lucas continuing to maintain his position as Chairman of the CCC Internal Affairs Committee and Alphonse Ashamalla our Player Representative the CCC has added three new "advisors" to it's ranks. (Pictured from Left to Right)Lee  Richardson has been elevated to the position of Entertainment Chairman, Mike Eberhardinger is now our Information Officer (and computer adviser) and Patrick McCartney is in charge of Ratings and Rules (interpretation).  Please thank each of these members for helping your club more than you'll ever know. Also, special thanks to Terry Brown, Esq. for his gracious assistance.
