    Greetings from Charlotte N.C, USA, Earth to everyone out there in cyberspace, and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. We have finally entered the ultra modern age of instant communication. In this column, which is updated every Thursday, we will strive to report a weekly synopsis of the previous meeting to include current standings, annotated games, and other interesting anecdotes for your reading, viewing, and listening pleasure. Our goal is to eventually provide our members with a "realtime" site which will instantly produce current information about chess with the click of a mouse! We welcome your comments and contributions

Liu Slows Fuerstman; Ulaky, Sr. and Shoup Perfect in Lower Section

A rather paltry turnout of only 22 of the most creative thinkers from the Charlotte area prayed for as many as 3 hours to "plastic and wooden idols" more commonly known as chess pieces as they competed in Rd:2 of Wendy's XVI.In the Top Section, with the game now adjourned, leader NM Leland Fuerstman (2058) made a slight inexactitude in the time scramble versus NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) which net the latter player a Pawn in an ECB endgame. Also in the Top Section, Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom (1920) knocked off Patrick McCartney (1895) while Jon "Infinity's End & Cigar Etc" Pietras (1754) has adjourned a relatively equal position with David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1832).  In the Middle Section, "still" CCC Website Advisor Carl McKern (1510) split the point with Slobodan Sinanovic (1493)  while Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1572) made quick work of "Iron" Mike Isner (1488). In the Lower Section, Jim Ulaky (1089) upset Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1321) to share the lead with Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1127) each with 2-0. Other Lower Section winners were, Darrell "Little Kobe" Spencer, Nick Bambara and Brandon Brown. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." 


SM Pohl, NM Liu Share Top Honors; Samuel Christopher Sweeps Lower Section in Smokehouse V

Seventeen weekend warriors participated in Smokehouse V on Saturday, 6-3-00.  In the Top Section, SM Klaus Pohl (2200) from Greenville, S.C. (captured here doing his best Doc Watson impersonation) dispatched of Gary Newsom (1902) and Patrick McCartney (1917) before agreeing to a "quick" draw with NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) who had defeated Jerome DeBell (1627) and NM Leland Fuerstman (2058) respectively.  Each took home $75. In the Lower Section,  Samuel Christopher (1052) scored a perfect 3-0 to take home the 1st Place prize of $70. Equal 2nd-4th with a score of 2-1 were Darrell Spencer (1327), Pete Danker (1310) and Daniel Tapia (990) each winning $12.
