 Wendy's XXXVII Begins; Missing King Replaced!
Charlotte, NC  8-21-02:   Forty-two of the Charlotte area's most inspired thinkers played their games with a "grain of salt" as they par- ticipated in Rd:1 of Wendy's XXXVIII.  In the Top Section, returning from the LPO with a strong finish of 3.5-1.5 the CCC's #1 active player NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2236) slipped past NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2021) while newly unofficially crowned NM Justin "Dog" Daniel (2204) prevailed after a wild melee with Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1931) (who finished =2nd-4th in the U2000 Section of the LPO (See Game 0247). Also, in the Top Section, NM John "Night-Train" Lane (2091) ousted Michael "the Mad Romanian" Curcuru (1827) while Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1774) split the point with NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000). In the Middle Section, scratch golfer Scott "field-goal" Hunter (1727) teed off on Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1622), David "Richman" Richards (1719) bought out "CEO" Mike Isner (1572), Daryl "Flesh" Gordon (1619) kayooed "Smokin" Brain Fraiser (1661), Deneil "Slick" Brazell (1665) short circuited Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg (1493), Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1657) hijacked Algie "Van" Clyburn (1500), Frank "Moo" Mu (1628) handled Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1441), Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1485) squeeked by Danesh "the Mad Iranian" Dadgar (1579) and the good Reverend Bernard "Jim" Baker (1616) exorcised Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1376). In the Lower Section, wins were turned in by: Darrell "Wilkes" Booth, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Paul "Johnny" Walker, Mike Richards, Ankit Jivan, Joe Shirlen, Hassan Hashemloo, Hao Lee and Todd Essex. IM's? Invade Smokehouse, Angel Mera Takes Top Honors
Charlotte, NC 8-24-02:  A new Smokehouse record of 38 chessplayers from far and wide participated in 4 Sections of Smokehouse XXX. In the Top Section, recent arrival from Ecuador, Angel Mera (2150p) scored a perfect 3-0 and took home $100 after wins over Patrick McCartney (1886), Jairo Moreira (2150p), and SM Klaus Pohl (2225). Equal 2nd-6th were SM Klaus Pohl, Jairo Moreira, Keith Eubanks, Tatiana Duarte and Patrick McCartney each with2-1winning$10. In the "B"Section, Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1665) also scored 3-0 and pocketed $100 after victories over Bob Moore (1720), Slobodan Sinanovic (1720) and Scott Hunter (1719). Equal 2nd-4th were Dave Richards,  Scott Hunter and James MacDougall each with 2-1 winning $17. In the "C" Section, Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1475) likewise scored 3-0 winning $100. Equal 2nd-5th were Laurin Keller, Richard Tomlin, Euphemia Mu and Danesh Dadgar each with 2-1 winning $12.50. In the Lower Section, team Wheeless overpowered the field as North Carolina's version of "Venus & Serina,"Colette Wheeless (1304) and Amelia Wheeless (1173) won their first 2 games and Drew in the final round to score 2.5-.5 and each pocket $60!
