Attendance Record Smashed; Chess is Alive and Well in Charlotte, NC - Daniel Takes Early Lead in Wendy's XVII

A new CCC "single round attendance record"of fourty of the greater Charlotte area's most enthusiastic chessplayers converged upon our holy temple of thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's on Wednesday evening in order to compete in Rd:2 of Wendy's XVII. In the Top Section CCC Favorite Son 16 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2002) successfully executed a splendid attack against CCC's highest rated player, NM "WWF" Frankie Newton (2193) to lead with 2-0. (See Game 0132)  The other leaders, NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) and Todd "Flower Power" Trower (2007) have adjourned a relatively equal "equal colored Bishops" ending while NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) yielded a draw to Patrick McCartney (1948).  In addition, with the Black pieces, Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom (1947) handled Gregory Bunich (1822) and David K. Jaap (1866) has adjourned with Jamie McGavran (1855). In the Cruiserweight Division Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1752) took down CCC Internal Affairs committee chairman Paul F. Lucas (1636).  In the Middle Section, Doug "Sly" Millsaps (1589) ran roughshod over "CEO" Mike Isner (1437) as Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1475) battered Jerome "BigGuy" DeBell (1522).  In addition, Darrell "Little Kobe" Spencer (1389) upset Randy Hight (1503) while Slobodan Sinanovic (1518) drew with Carl McKern (1500).  In the Lower Section, three players lead with 2-0.  Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1302) bested Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1341), Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1210) worked over Derek Smith (1143) and Winfred "Windy" Gatlin (1054) stopped the winning streak of Nick "BamBam" Bambara (1087).  Other Lower Section winners were: "Fabulous Kays" lead singer and trumpet player Lee "MadMan" Richardson, Don Norwood, Jim Ulaky, Frank Mu and new member Euphemia Mu.  All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable.""See you Saturday at Smokehouse VI!" SM Pohl, NM Newton Share Honors in Smokehouse VI
A Record breaking (for CCC Saturday 3 rounders) twenty-four of the CCC's elite guard participated in Smokehouse VI on August 12, 2000.  In the Top Section, SM "King" Klaus Pohl (2253) dispatched of  Patrick McCartney (1948) and NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) before agreeing to a "quick" final round Draw with co-champion NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2193) who had narrowly defeated Gary "the Nuisance"  Newsom (1947) and Kenneth J. Baxter (1951) respectively.  Each took home $75. Finishing =3rd-4th were NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) and returnee to competition Ken Baxter (1951) each with 2-1.  In the Middle Section, Charlotte Symphony's lead percussionist and FSC (Fuerstman School of Chess) Graduate Jim Ulaky (1167) first upset returnee to competition Gregory Bunich (1800p) before playing a drum roll on Rob Morse (1193).
