NEWS & VIEWS 8-4-11
Fuerstman Scores Perfect 5-0 in
Top; Gatlin Takes "B"; Frazier, Abril Lower
Section of Skyland XXV
Charlotte,
NC 8-3-11: A grand
total of 23 of the most contented
calculators in the county converged upon
this mental jousting arena more
commonly known as the Skyland
Family Restaurant in order to
participate in Skyland XXV. (CCC members
got very comfortable
sitting
in
the
padded
booths and full size
tables and chairs while being
catered to by our own
personal waitress, Cathy!
Most enjoyed a
generously portioned delicious
home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot
coffee and other
beverages, analyzed on our demo
board and occasionally
monitored the giant flat screen
TV with the sound
turned off; open 24 hours!) In
the Top
Section, in anti-climactic
fashion, the CCC's #3 player, the pride of Mint Hill,
ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, NM Leland
"Ennui" Fuerstman
(2066) was the recipient
of an early blunder by an apparently
nearsighted Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1843) (See Game 0971)
which allowed the aging veteran, who
defeated CCC's
#1 & #2, each with the Black
pieces, to finish clear 1st Place
with a perfect 5-0 and post a
"performance rating" of 2514! Kudos to Fuerstman
who took home a cash prize of $50,000! (Check that; more like enough money
for 5 great meals at Skyland
and a hot cup of coffee!!) In
addition, Slobodan
"the Mad Serb" Sinanovic
(1831) survived a wild and "clumsy" time
scramble with "Wild" Bill Connell (1927) who
unfortunately made an "illegal move" and, faced
with adding 2 minutes to his opponents clock,
resigned. Meanwhile, superhero Daryl "Flash"
Gordon
(1839) actually "won" a 2 Pawns up time scramble
against Bill "Mindweeder" Wright (1668). In the
"B" Section,
Winfred
"Guns" Gatlin
(1626) unloaded on "Smokin" Corey Frazier (1290)
to take clear 1st
Place with 3-0. In
the Lower
Section,
newcomer Fabian
Abril (Unr) took down newcomer Emmanuel
Cooper (Unr) to finish =1st-2nd
with Frazier
each with 3-2. In
addition, Kenneth
Philson (795) beat down John Knarr
(1094). In order to observe
all
results see "Current Crosstable"- The facility was great
and
everybody was happy! We hope that more
players will join us next
Wednesday to dine, socialize and play
chess!
Everyone is welcome... Long live the CCC!
