Draws Abound as Sciacca, Mahan, McCartney Lead Top; Lucas "B"; S. Fuerstman Lower Section of Skyland XXXVI
Charlotte, NC 8-8-12: A strong turnout of 25 of the most intelligent and good looking chess players in the Charlotte area converged upon this grand ballroom more commonly known as the Skyland Family Restaurant in order to participate in Rd:3 of Skyland XXXVI(CCC members got very comfortable sitting in the padded booths and full size tables and chairs while being catered to by our own personal waitress, Cindy. Most enjoyed a generously portioned delicious home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board and monitored  the giant flat screen TV with the sound turned off; open 24 hours!) In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Pat "Kahn" Sciacca (2175) gained a slight advantage in the middlegame but active counterplay on Team Asheboro Expert Wil "Mayhem" Mahan's (2051) part (See Game 1090) steered the ending to a R&P Draw. In addition, Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2027) got a bit frisky in the opening only to suffer the effects of a Queen sac for 3 pieces by the pride of Mint Hill, ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, Top 65+ player in NC, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2011) who butchered the ending (See Game 1089) and Drew allowing McCartney to share the lead with 2-1. Meanwhile, WFM Jenny Leveikina (2106) fresh back from holiday, made a quick Draw with Michael "Jordan" Kliber (1979). In addition, renewing member, 12 year old Daniel Cremisi (1818) split the point with Asheboro CC guru Tom "Terrific" Hales (1800) while the Judge Slobodan Sinanovic (1822) defeated countryman Nico Matic (1738). In the "B" Section, Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1763) sacked a Pawn, as usual, and made 1...Nc6! work against Ron "Dutch" Breukelaar (1749) to lead with 3-0. In the Lower Section, Sam "Son of Leland" Fuerstman (1064) earned a field promotion to the "C" Section and summarily defeated "Smokin" Corey Frazier (1404) to lead with 3-0. In addition, Rich "Alert" Trela (1198) outplayed Eric Hartung (1076), Luke "Yogi" Baer (Unr) bested Ray "Sawx" Drury (796) and Marat Kocharyan (1196) defeated Harry Youchak (1381). In order to observe all results see "Current Crosstable" The facility was great and everybody was happy! We hope that more players will join us next Wednesday to dine, socialize and play one rated game of chess! Everyone is welcome. Long live the CCC!
Brosi Clear 1st Place in Mint Hill VI
Mint Hill, NC 8-12-12:
Four loyal members of the CCC royal guard converged upon the palatial estate of NM LF in order to participate in Mint Hill VI (G65) and enjoy a hardy lunch! In Rd:1, "...look, up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's SUPERMAN disguised as mild mannered reporter for the Daily Planet Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1890) who vanquished the pride of Mint Hill, ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman
(2011) in Rd:1 while Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1762) again escaped certain death in a time scramble from Judge Slobodan Sinanovic (1816). In Rd:2, Fuerstman's Fromm Gambit prevailed over the good Judge while "Superman" outlasted the "Survivalist." In Rd:3, "Ennui Boy" barely survived against Lucas while Brosi agreed to Draw in a time scramble with the Judge to secure clear 1st Place with 2.5-.5 and win $40. Fuerstman was 2nd with 2-1 winning $20. See Crosstable. An enjoyable time was had by all. Fuerstman directed.
