CCC
NEWS & VIEWS 10-16-03
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton, Liu, McCartney Share
Top Honors; Baker "B"; Gatlin "C"; Abdelkefi 5-0
in Lower Section of Wendy's XLIX
Charlotte,
NC 10-15-03: In spite of the fact that Ex-World
Champion Anatoly Karpov (2596) was a no show, 58
faithful followers of this sacred ritual we call chess, abandoned
the less important things in life and instead participated in Wendy's
XLIX.
In the Top Section, recovering from a serious knee injury,
the CCC's #1 player, current N.C. State Champion,
NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2280) 3.5-1.5
won
his unprecedented 30th Wendy's Title! after a very gracious
Draw offer versus NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2022)
3.5-1.5
who won his 2nd Wendy's
Title. Bringing up the rear by winning
his last three games and also scoring 3.5-1.5
was Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1980) who
survived an incredible see-saw battle against NM Leland "El-idi-ote" Fuerstman
(2028) to take his 5th Wendy's Title (See
Game 0350). In addition, CCC Favorite Son, current N.C.
Scholastic Champion, Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia
(2137)
locked the phone booth on mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1848) while
counselor Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1712) prosecuted
against Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1789). In the "B" Section, the
good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1728) took liberties
with Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1666) to take 1st Place with 4.5-.5.
Meanwhile, Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1599) upset
Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1723) and Dave "Richman" Richards (1627)
beat down Algie "Van" Clyburn (1500). In the "C" Section, though
he lost the final round to Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1524), Winfred
"Guns" Gatlin (1389), the lowest rated player in the section!, captured
clear 1st Place with 4-1(See
Game 0352). (To view Gatlin's win over Jiri Janko
in the Carolina Class "Click Here." Meanwhile,
Jeremy
"Irons" Davenport (1611) muted the trumpet of Spencer "Jazzman"
Singleton (1528), Marnzell "Helping"
Hand (1607) made peace
with Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1505) and newcomer Geoffrey
"Ray" Charles (Unr) split the point with Michael "You Know
You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1519). In the Lower Section,
winning his 10th consecutive game in CCC competition, Kaled "the
Alphabet" Abdelkefi (1534p)
scored a perfect 5-0 and pocketed $100
for
his final round victory over Sean "the Villain" Villone(1213)(See
Game 0349) . Honorable mention
goes to Todd Essex (1168) who took Clear 2nd Place with 4-0!
Other Lower Section winners were: Craig "Xan" Hamilton,
Todd Essex, Tony "the Tiger" Hicks and CCC Player
Representative Alphonse "Amazing AL" Ashamalla. All
results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."
