NEWS & VIEWS 10-9-03
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton, Liu Lead Top; Baker
"B"; Gatlin "C"; Abdelkefi Lower Section of Wendy's XLIX
Charlotte,
NC 10-8-03: An extremely healthy crowd of
44
of the Metrolina area's most talented wood pushers gathered at
this arena of mental jousters more commonly known as Wendy's in order to
participate in Rd:4 of Wendy's
XLIX. (Unfortunately,
on this evening the peace was disturbed somewhat, first by the loud music
and then by the voluminous repartee displayed by the employees...this Director
will be discussing these issues tomorrow with higher management. UPDATE:
UpperManagement
has promised a more quiet and pleasant atmosphere next week!)
In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, current NC State
Champion, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2280) managed to squeeze
out a tactical win versus NM Leland "Jefe" Fuerstman (2028) and share the
lead at 3-1 with NM Daniel "Deep"
Liu
(2014) who
survived an extra piece vs pawns ending against Michael "See You Are; See
You Are You" Curcuru (2082) (See Game 0348).
Meanwhile, Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1980) clobbered Michael
Kliber (1900) while
DinoPeBenito
(1956p) split the point with
Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2004) as did
Jon
"Cigars Pietras
(1800) with mild mannered Clarke "Kent"
Brosi (1835). In
the "B" Section, the good Reverend
Bernard "King" Baker
(1729) surged
ahead of the pack with a convincing win over Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic
(1712) to lead with 3.5-.5. In addition,
Tarokh
"the Oak" Taefi (1756) deported Jeremy Davenport (1604),
KenIvens
(1710) did a terrible thing to Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1723) and
Dave
"Richman" Richards (1665) made his day against Chris "Dirty Harry"
Callahan (1657). In the "C" Section, Winfred
"Guns"
Gatlin
(1410) unloaded
on Tim "the Chin" Chen (1514) to lead with 4-0.(See
Game 0347) In addition, Spencer
"Jazzman" Singleton
(1528) played taps for Algie "Van" Clyburn (1500), Kert Edward
(1995p) bested Michael "Y" Shoup
(1531) and Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1500) made peace with Ankit
"Butch" Jivan (1505). In the Lower
Section, Kaled
"the Alphabet" Abdelkefi (1322) dunked
on Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1413) to maintain a perfect 4-0.
Other Lower Section winners were: Todd Essex, Tony
"the Tiger" Hicks, Joe "SticksJr" Ulaky, ShawnClaitt,
Doyle
