and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. In this column, which
is continuously updated,
we will report a weekly synopsis of the previous meeting to include current
standings, annotated games, and other interesting anecdotes for your reading,
viewing, and listening
pleasure.

Charlotte Players Dominate North Carolina High
School Championship!

NC 3-10-02: Congratulations
are in order for the
First
Place Harding
High School Chess Team which was comprised
of CCC Favorite Son, 17 year old phenom, soon to be Master Justin
"Dog" Daniel (2186), soon to be CCC Favorite Son, 15 year
old phenom, Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2028) and Kaustubh
R. Pimputkar (1626). Each tied for =1st-3rd with 4.5-.5.
Pimputkar's top tie-break total won him the right to compete in the
annual Denker Tournament which coincides with the U.S.

Daniel Leads Top; Brosi, Richards, Millsaps Middle;
Baker Lower Section of Wendy's XXXIII
Charlotte,
NC 3-20-02: A veritable crwth of 45!
of the Metrolina area's most determined chess players forwent watching
Michael Jordan's return to competition and
instead participated in Rd:4 of Wendy's XXXIII. In
the Top Section, CCC Favorite Son 17 year old phenom, Expert
and soon to be Master Justin "Dog" Daniel (2166) defeated
protege 16 year old phenom Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2039) to take
a commanding one point lead over the field in the penultimate round.(See
Game 0214) Meanwhile, CCC's #1 player, NM
Frankie
"Blitz" Newton (2233) could only manage a Draw versus NM Leland
"Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2018). In addition, NM
Garrick
"Outlaw" Wells (2082) snuffed out Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1787) while
Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1918) bested David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1831).
In the Middle Section, "up in the sky, it's a bird, it's
a plane, it's "Superman" Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1796) who halted
the winning streak of David "Richman" Richards (1665),Doug
"Sky" Millsaps (1617) rampaged Jerome "Cookie Monster" DeBell (1654),
Frank
"Chessman"
Johnson
(1428) upstaged Marat Kocharyan (Unr), Algie "Van"
Clyburn
(1500) beat Frank Mu (1394), Danesh "the Mad Iranian"
Dadgar
(1550) retaliated against Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1550)
and student Deneil "Slick"
Brazell (1552) defeated teacher
Mr.Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1421). In the Lower
Section,

incidentally, has been promoted to the Middle Section, remains
a perfect 4-0 after defeating Jered Williams

NC 3-16-02: A total of 28
of North Carolina's best chessplayers, and at least two from S.C. participated
in Smokehouse XXV. In the Top Section, SM Klaus
Pohl (2225)
from Greenville, SC defeated David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1831), NM Daniel "Deep"
Liu (2010) (See Game 0212) and
NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2018) on his way to a second consecutive
perfect Smokehouse title and a cash prize of $100.
Equal 2nd-4th with 2-1 were 16 year old phenom, newly crowned
Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2039), 54 year old "hasbeen"
NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2018) (See
Game 0213) and Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1918) each
pocketing $17. In the Middle
Section,
Scott
Baldwin's (1731) perfect
score included wins over Marnzell Hand (1600), Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian"
Ozherelyev (1550) and Laurin Keller (1478) while Daneil "Slick"
Brazell's
(1552) victims
included Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1428), Viktor Ozherelyev and Danesh
"Shah" Dadgar (1550). Each took home $75.
In
the Lower Section, newcomer
Kirill Temlyakov (Unr)
from Irmo, SC (by way of Moskow) dispatched of Dennis Wall, Frank Hatcher
and Sergio Orichi-Socana scoring 3-0 and collecting $80.
Equal 2nd-4th with 2-1 were Chris Thomas, Dennis Wall
and Sergio Orichi-Socana each winning $13.
