Daniel Wins Top; Richards Middle; Baker Lower Section of Wendy's XXXIII
Charlotte, NC 3-27-02: A grand total of 63 of the most creative thinkers from the Southern Piedmont area participated in Wendy's XXXIII. In the Top Section, CCC Favorite Son, 17 year old phenom, Expert and soon to be Master Justin "Dog" Daniel (2166) cruised his way to victory after a lively Draw with NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2082). Daniel's clear 1st Place score of 4-1 allowed him to capture his 7th Wendy's Title. Clear 2nd Place with 3.5-1.5 was the CCC's #1 player NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2216) who outflanked Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1918). Meanwhile, David "Kamikaze" Jaap upset NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2018) while Michael Kliber (1900) clobbered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1797). (Actually, it was a very close game that went down to the wire in the 2nd time control). In the Cruiserweight Division, Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1787) bested Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1600). Clear 1st Place in the Middle Section with 4-1 was David "Richman" Richards (1660) who edged out Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1428). In addition, Jerome "Cookie Monster" DeBell (1654) rolled Michael "Y" Shoup (1550), Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1716) upstaged Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1550), Algie "Van" Clyburn (1500) outplayed Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1615), Danesh "Shah" Dadgar (1550) beat down Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1421) and Deneil "Slick" Brazell (1552) upset "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1620). In the Lower Section, newcomer Bernard "B-man" Baker (1472) graciously agreed to play a Middle Section player in the final round yet only narrowly missed winning a $100 Bonus before yielding a perpetual check Draw to Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1617). Other Lower Section winners were: Clyde "the Glide" Plyler (See Game 0215), Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (See Game 0216), Ankit Jivan, Louie "Louie" Goodson, Kevin Huang, Mike Richards, John Meyer and newcomer Gennady Brazhnikov. Pohl Perfect Again!; Baldwin, Brazell 3-0 In Middle; Temlyakov 3-0 In Lower Section of Smokehouse XXV
Charlotte, NC 3-16-02:  A total of 28 of North Carolina's best chessplayers, and at least two from S.C. participated in Smokehouse XXV. In the Top Section, SM Klaus Pohl (2225) from Greenville, SC defeated David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1831), NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2010)  (See Game 0212) and NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2018) on his way to a second consecutive perfect Smokehouse title and a cash prize of $100. Equal 2nd-4th with 2-1 were 16 year old phenom, newly crowned Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2039), 54 year old "hasbeen" NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2018) (See Game 0213) and Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1918) each pocketing $17. In the Middle Section, Scott Baldwin's (1731) perfect score included wins over Marnzell Hand (1600), Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1550) and Laurin Keller (1478) while Daneil "Slick" Brazell's (1552) victims included Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1428), Viktor Ozherelyev and Danesh "Shah" Dadgar (1550). Each took home $75. In the Lower Section, newcomer Kirill Temlyakov (Unr) from Irmo, SC (by way of Moskow) dispatched of Dennis Wall, Frank Hatcher and Sergio Orichi-Socana scoring 3-0 and collecting $80.
