By NM Leland Fuerstman
Daniel Holds Slim Lead in Top Section; Ashamalla Perfect in Lower Section of Wendy's XVII

Thirty-six "Wednesday night Warriors" first set their VCR's to record the "Man Show" and then participated in Rd:3 of Wendy's XVII.  In the Top Section, to the obvious disappointment of the blood thirsty spectators, tournament leader and CCC Favorite Son Expert Justin Daniel (2066) agreed to a rather brief Draw versus NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) to maintain a one-half point lead over the field. Bouncing back from last week's horrific loss, NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II overpowered Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1752) while with the Black pieces,  NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2151) and David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1866) defeated Patrick McCartney (1948) and David "the Bear" Griffin (1661) respectively.  In addition, returnee to competition Gregory "the Mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1822) displayed solid  technique in an "ECB" ending to register a Draw versus NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000). In the Middle Section, Paul Lucas (1636) got the better of Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1475), Slobodan Sinanovic (1518) handled "CEO" Mike Isner (1437), Randy Hight (1500) took out Jerome "BigGuy" DeBell (1522) and I.O. "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1657) administered a good licking to Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1589). In addition, Carl McKern (1500) bested Stanley Mack (1400). In the Lower Section, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla assumes the honorable distinction of being the only player in the tournament with a perfect 3-0 score! Other Lower Section winners were: Daryl "Flash" Gordon, Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup, Joe Ulaky and Scott Grimes. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." A warm welcome to new CCC members Mike Sawyer and Jason Wright.

SM Pohl, NM Newton Share Honors in Smokehouse VI
A Record breaking (for CCC Saturday 3 rounders) twenty-four of the CCC's elite guard participated in Smokehouse VI on August 12, 2000.  In the Top Section, SM "King" Klaus Pohl (2253) dispatched of  Patrick McCartney (1948) and NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) before agreeing to a "quick" final round Draw with co-champion NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2193) who had narrowly defeated Gary "the Nuisance"  Newsom (1947) and Kenneth J. Baxter (1951) respectively.  Each took home $75. Finishing =3rd-4th were NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) and returnee to competition Ken Baxter (1951) each with 2-1.  In the Middle Section, Charlotte Symphony's lead percussionist and FSC (Fuerstman School of Chess) Graduate Jim Ulaky (1167) first upset returnee to competition Gregory Bunich (1800p) before playing a drum roll on Rob Morse (1193). His lively final round encounter with Euphemia Mu (1154) allowed him to produce a perfect 3-0! and pocket $100 cash.  Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 were Gregory Bunich and Euphemia Mu each winning $25. In the four man Lower Section, Samuel Christopher (1142) also scored a perfect 3-0 to grab the $40 first prize.  The $20 Second Place prize went to Joe Feiler (1059) who scored 2-1.  Fuerstman directed.
