Daniel Takes Commanding Lead in Top; Tapia in Lower Section of Wendy's XVII

No less than 3 dozen of  the greater Charlotte area's most active chessplayers  purposely ignored all of the other problems of the world for three and one-half hours, and instead chose to compete in Rd:4 of Wendy's XVII.  In the Top Section, CCC Favorite Son, 16 year old phenom, Expert Justin Daniel (2066) effectively dismembered the Alekhine's Defense of NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) (See Game 0133)  to give him a commanding lead over the field with 3.5-.5 and a guaranteed share of the "title." Meanwhile, NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2215) stands a piece to the good in an adjourned King's Indian Defense ending versus NM Leland Fuerstman (2013). (Only a miracle can save it for Black).  Also, in the Top Section, NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2151) bested Gregory "the Mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1822) while David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1866) has adjourned against Patrick McCartney (1866). In the Cruiserweight Division Jesse Liu (1895) bested Paul Calloway (1675) while Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1752) has adjourned against CCC I.O. "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1657).  In the Middle Section Slobodan Sinanovic (1518) upset Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1589), Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1500) defeated Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1475), Randy Hight (1503) handled Scott Grimes (Unr) and Jerome "BigGuy" DeBell (1522) and Carl McKern (1500) split the point. In the Lower Section, Alphonse  "Amazing Al" Ashamalla's (1302) winning streak came to an end at the hands of Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1210) who leads the section with 3.5-.5.  Other Lower Section winners were: Brandon Brown, Daryl "Flash" Gordon, Euphemia Mu, Joe Shirlen, Jarris McGhee-Bey and Derek Smith. A Record breaking (for CCC Saturday 3 rounders) twenty-four of the CCC's elite guard participated in Smokehouse VI on August 12, 2000.  In the Top Section, SM "King" Klaus Pohl (2253) dispatched of  Patrick McCartney (1948) and NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) before agreeing to a "quick" final round Draw with co-champion NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2193) who had narrowly defeated Gary "the Nuisance"  Newsom (1947) and Kenneth J. Baxter (1951) respectively.  Each took home $75. Finishing =3rd-4th were NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) and returnee to competition Ken Baxter (1951) each with 2-1.  In the Middle Section, Charlotte Symphony's lead percussionist and FSC (Fuerstman School of Chess) Graduate Jim Ulaky (1167) first upset returnee to competition Gregory Bunich (1800p) before playing a drum roll on Rob Morse (1193). His lively final round encounter with Euphemia Mu (1154) allowed him to produce a perfect 3-0! and pocket $100 cash.  Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 were Gregory Bunich and Euphemia Mu each winning $25. In the four man Lower Section, Samuel Christopher (1142) also scored a perfect 3-0 to grab the $40 first prize.  The $20 Second Place prize went to Joe Feiler (1059) who scored 2-1.  Fuerstman directed.
