CCC NEWS &VIEWS 8-31-00
By NM Leland Fuerstman

Daniel Wins 1st Place in Top; Sinanovic in Middle; Tapia in Lower Section of Wendy's XVII

A grand total of 49 of the most gifted thinkers this side of Waxhaw completely  neglected the "Survivors" and instead chose to compete in Wendy's XVII, a five round USCF rated chess tournament.  In the Top Section, youth prevailed as CCC Favorite Son, 16 year old phenom, Expert Justin Daniel (2070) disposed of an "A" player, and then 4 consecutive  "Masters" (amassing a performance rating of 2369) as he defeated Jamie McGavran (1855) and NM "WWF" Frankie Newton (2226) in the first two rounds, yielded a "gratis" Draw to NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) in Rd:3, and concluded the final two rounds with wins over NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) and NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2151)! Daniel's superb score of 4.5-.5 will surely boost his rating over the "2100" mark!  Second Place was captured by NM "WWF" Frankie Newton (2226) who defeated David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1866) in the final round to finish with 3.5-1.5. Also, in the Top Section, NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) handled Jon "the merchant" Pietras (1792)(See Game 0134)  while Patrick McCartney (1866) got by Gregory "the mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1822).  In the Middle Section, for the third time in as many tournaments, recent emigre from Yugoslavia Slobodan Sinanovic (1585) found himself in the "winner's circle"  with a convincing final round win over veteran Randy Hight (1503). Also, in the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1612) beat paul Lucas (1600) while Carl McKern (1500) and Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1407) Drew with visitor from Wilmington David Mangis (1524) and "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1633) respectively. In the Lower Section, again for the third time in as many tournaments, 14 year old Daniel Tapia (1332) emerged victorious with a final round victory over Sam Christopher (1142) to score 4.5-.5.  Second Place with 4-1 was Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1294) who posted an excellent final round win over Brandon Brown (1281). Other Lower Section winners were: Jim "Sticks" Ulaky, Don Norwood, Derek Smith, Euphemia Mu and Frank Mu. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." All welcome new CCC member David Mangis. See ya' September 9 at Smokehouse VII.

SM Pohl, NM Newton Share Honors in Smokehouse VI
A Record breaking (for CCC Saturday 3 rounders) twenty-four of the CCC's elite guard participated in Smokehouse VI on August 12, 2000.  In the Top Section, SM "King" Klaus Pohl (2253) dispatched of  Patrick McCartney (1948) and NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) before agreeing to a "quick" final round Draw with co-champion NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2193) who had narrowly defeated Gary "the Nuisance"  Newsom (1947) and Kenneth J. Baxter (1951) respectively.  Each took home $75. Finishing =3rd-4th were NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) and returnee to competition Ken Baxter (1951) each with 2-1.  In the Middle Section, Charlotte Symphony's lead percussionist and FSC (Fuerstman School of Chess) Graduate Jim Ulaky (1167) first upset returnee to competition Gregory Bunich (1800p) before playing a drum roll on Rob Morse (1193). His lively final round encounter with Euphemia Mu (1154) allowed him to produce a perfect 3-0! and pocket $100 cash.  Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 were Gregory Bunich and Euphemia Mu each winning $25. In the four man Lower Section, Samuel Christopher (1142) also scored a perfect 3-0 to grab the $40 first prize.  The $20 Second Place prize went to Joe Feiler (1059) who scored 2-1.  Fuerstman directed.
