NEWS & VIEWS 11-29-12
Sciacca Leads Top; Breukelaar "B";
Linker "C"; Frazier Lower Section of Skyland
XXXIX
Charlotte,
NC 11-28-12: A strong turnout of 26 (every table was occupied!)
of the most competitive calculators in the
Charlotte area converged upon this grand
ballroom more
commonly known as the Skyland
Family Restaurant in order to
participate in Rd:4
of Skyland XXXIX. (CCC members
got very comfortable
sitting
in
the
padded
booths and full size
tables and chairs while being
catered to by our own
personal waitress, Cindy.
Most enjoyed a
generously portioned delicious
home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot coffee and other
beverages, analyzed
on our demo board and monitored
the giant flat screen TV with the sound
turned off; open 24 hours!) (All CCC members were happy to see "Judge" Slobodan
Sinanovic
back from his
visit to
Montenegro. He
promptly
posted a
tricky White
to mate in 2!
Welcome back,
your honor!)
In
the Top
Section,
the CCC's #2
player, NM Pat
"Kahn" Sciacca
Esq.
(2153) squared
off against
the CCC's
#3 player,
the pride of Columbia,
SC, Expert
Keith "Chuckie"
Eubanks (2104)
(who
travels 200 miles
round trip
just to
compete at the
Charlotte
Chess Club!)
and
incorporated
another trick
opening which
somewhat
stymied the Black
pieces, (See
Game 1121)
eventually
winning in the
time scramble!
With his
uncatchable
score of 4-0, by virtue
of the "Fischer
Rule," Sciacca
only needs to
show up
and collect
his $100
next week!
But, you
can expect
him to
play..!
Meanwhile,
the CCC's
#1 player,
Expert
Shawn "P
Diddy" Pealer
(2165) was
upset by
Expert Patrick
"Flanker" McCartney
(2043) while the
pride of Mint
Hill, Ex-member
of the NCCA
Hall of Fame,
NM Leland
"Ennui" Fuerstman
(2024) went to
the wire with
Expert
Michael
"Bolton"
Kliber (2036)
before the
latter player
rejected
the Draw
(See
Game 1119)
and overstepped
the time
limit. In
addition,
"Wild" Bill
Connell
(1936) split
the point with
award
winning Director
Ron
"Howard" Brosi
(1891). In
the "B" Section,
Dr. Ron
"Dutch" Breukelaar
(1684) beat
down Paul
"Survivalist"
Lucas (1765)
to
lead with 2 points. In
addition, Team
Monroe's
Tony "the
Tiger" Cato
(1611) welcomed renewing member Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn
(1500) back to CCC competition while "Judge" Slobodan
Sinanovic (1777) made peace with "Little" Joe
Little (1544). In the "C" Section, Team
Monroe's Ian "Fleming" Haigler
(1577) defeated team mate Anthony Cato (1515) but
Jesse "James" Linker
(1446) still leads with 2
points. In the Lower Section,
"Smokin" Corey Frazier (1318) knocked
out David Hilley (1472) to lead with 3-1. Meanwhile,
Rich "Alert" Trela
(1127) beat down Michael Trott (Unr) while Eric
"Truth" Hartung (1227) defeated Emanuel
Cooper (727). In
order to observe
all
results see "Current Crosstable" The
facility was great
and
everybody was happy! We hope that more
players will join us next
Wednesday to dine, socialize and play
one rated game of chess! Everyone
is welcome. Long live the CCC!

Fuerstman,
Kliber Share Top Honors in Reserve Angel
VIII; Haigler
Takes Lower Section
Charlotte, NC
11-24-12: An
equal turnout of 19 of
the most loyal and contented holiday revelers
assembled on the 7th floor of the Dowd
"Y" in order to participate in Reserve
Angel VIII. (Every person, to a man,
had fun at this event! It's still difficult for
me to get used to the silence!)
In the Top Section, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman
(2010) dispatched of Tony "the Tiger" Cato (1620)
in Rd:1 before his celebrated encounter
with Expert Keith "Chuckie" Eubanks
(2107) in Rd:2 whereby White won a
piece but suffered because of an
undeveloped Queenside. The ensuing line
allowed the extraordinary 26...
b2!? (See Game 1118)
whereupon Black went on to win! In the
final round, Fuerstman promptly agreed to
a GM Draw with Expert Michael
"Bolton" Kliber (2025) who clobbered Bob
Moore (1700) in Rd:1 and Sulia Mason (2016) in Rd:2
each finishing =1st-2nd Place with
2.5-.5 and
pocketing $75.
In the Lower Section, Team
Monroe's Ian "Fleming" Haigler
(1528) defeated Marat Kocharyan (1445) in Rd:1, "Little" Joe Little
(Unr) in Rd:2 and Eric "Truth" Hartung
(1225) in Rd:3 to finish Clear 1st
Place with 3-0
and take home $90.
Clear 2nd Place was renewing CCC
member Marnzell "Pat" Hand (1600)
with 2.5-.5
winning $45.
In order to observe all results see "Crosstable."
Fuerstman directed.
