Sciacca Leads Top Section; Lucas "B"; Gatlin "C"; Hartung Lower Section of Skyland XL ------ Happy Holidays!!
Charlotte, NC 12-19-12: Another "extra large" turnout of 22 of the most gallant warriors from 4 cities including 10 players with ratings above 2000! converged upon this palatial cathedral more commonly known as the Skyland Family Restaurant in order to participate in Rd:2 of Skyland XL(By the way, when I left at 11:20pm, there were still 17 players hanging around conversing, analyzing, eating desert and playing speed chess!) (CCC members got very comfortable sitting in the padded booths and full size tables and chairs while being catered to by our own personal waitress, Cindy. Most enjoyed a generously portioned delicious home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board and monitored  the giant flat screen TV with the sound turned off; open 24 hours!) In the Top Section, unofficially, the CCC's #1 player, NM Pat "Kahn" Sciacca, Esq. (2164) ran Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney's (2059) King up to the middle of the battlefield before issuing the recumbentibus blow (See Game 1131) to lead with 2-0. Meanwhile, the CCC's "officially" #1 player, Expert Shawn "P Diddy" Pealer (2157) went to the wire with a stubborn Expert Michael "Bolton" Kliber (2025) who overstepped the time limit, Team Asheboro's Expert Wil "Mayhem" Mahan (2069) hung tough and won in the end against Team Columbia's Expert Keith "Chuckie" Eubanks (2101), Team Columbia's Expert James "Big" MacDougall (2019) controlled the opening and middlegame before snapping a Pawn (See Game 1129) versus "Wild" Bill Connell (1936), Expert Alain Morais (2055) returned to CCC competition with a vengeance (See Game 1130) by promptly defeating the pride of Mint Hill, Ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2027) and Team Greensboro's Josh "Lawman" Lawson (1991) split the point with WFM Jenny Leveikina (2098) who just returned to the U.S. from Germany! In the "B" Section, Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1751) ditched his Queen for Rook and Knight before tricking Team Greensboro's John Retarides (1636) to lead with 1-1. In the "C" Section, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1598) outplayed Team Greensboro's Tony "Prime Time" Sanders (1577) to lead with 2-0. In the Lower Section, Eric "Truth" Hartung (1215) defeated Rich "Alert" Trela (1145) to lead with 2-0. In addition, "Little" Joe Little (1334) beat down "Smokin" Corey Frazier (1406). In order to observe all results see "Current Crosstable" The facility was great and everybody was happy! We hope that more players will join us next Wednesday to dine, socialize and play one rated game of chess! Everyone is welcome. Long live the CCC! Happy Holidays!!
Fuerstman, Kliber Share Top Honors in Reserve Angel VIII; Haigler Takes Lower Section
Charlotte, NC 11-24-12: An equal turnout of 19 of the most loyal and contented holiday revelers assembled on the 7th floor of the Dowd "Y" in order to participate in Reserve Angel VIII. (Every person, to a man, had fun at this event! It's still difficult for me to get used to the silence!) In the Top Section, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2010) dispatched of Tony "the Tiger" Cato (1620) in Rd:1 before his celebrated encounter with Expert Keith "Chuckie" Eubanks (2107) in Rd:2 whereby White won a piece but suffered because of an undeveloped Queenside. The ensuing line allowed the extraordinary 26... b2!? (See Game 1118) whereupon Black went on to win! In the final round, Fuerstman promptly agreed to a GM Draw with Expert Michael "Bolton" Kliber (2025) who clobbered Bob Moore (1700) in Rd:1 and Sulia Mason (2016) in Rd:2 each finishing =1st-2nd Place with 2.5-.5 and pocketing $75. In the Lower Section, Team Monroe's Ian "Fleming" Haigler (1528) defeated Marat Kocharyan (1445) in Rd:1, "Little" Joe Little (Unr) in Rd:2 and Eric "Truth" Hartung (1225) in Rd:3 to finish Clear 1st Place with 3-0 and take home $90. Clear 2nd Place was renewing CCC member Marnzell "Pat" Hand (1600) with 2.5-.5 winning $45. In order to observe all results see "Crosstable." Fuerstman directed.
