In Memoriam: It is with
great sadness that I learned of the death of Howard Hamilton, 54 of North
Wilksboro. He loved chess, he loved to have fun, and he loved people.
A fierce competitor in his own right, win or lose, he was always
a gentleman. Rest in peace old friend. LF

NEWS & VIEWS 12-24-09 Skyland IX
Begins Merry Christmas! Charlotte, NC 12-23-09:
A happy team of 12 tiny
reindeer landed on the roof of theSkyland Family
Restaurantand mysteriously
transformed themselves into chess players in order to participate in Rd:1 of Skyland IX. (CCC
members got very comfortable
sitting in the padded booths
and
full size tables and chairs while
being
catered to by
a team of
friendly waitresses. Most
enjoyed a generously
portioned delicious home
style meal for
a ridiculously
low price
($5.95!),
drank fresh
hot coffee and
other
beverages, analyzed
on our demo board
and occasionally
monitored the giant flat screen TV with the sound
turned down;
open 24 hours!!) In the Top
Section, the pride
of Mint Hill, ex-member of the NCCA
Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2016) really had his hands full with returnee to CCC competition
Tony Cato (1600) who "possibly" missed a Draw on move 34(See Game 0841) to lead with 1-0.
Meanwhile, occasional visitor from Charleston,
S.C.Stephen "the Drawing Master" Welt (1923) demonstrated to this Director's satisfaction a
"threepete" of the position in order to claim half a point from Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1865). In the "C" Section, Slavic "the Happy Ukrainian" Fedko (1462) beat down "Smokin"
Corey Frazier (1163) while Winfred
"Guns" Gatlin (1401)
introduced team Charleston's James Doyle (1203) to CCC competition to
each lead with 1-0.
In the Lower Section, Anthony Cato (1020) split the point with the good Reverend Erman Bradley (Unr). In
order
to observe all results see "Current Crosstable"-
The
facility was
great and everybody was happy! We hope that more players
will
join us next Wednesdayto
