NEWS & VIEWS 2-17-11
Skyland
XXI Begins; Vees Wins!!
Charlotte, NC 2-16-11:
An even stronger turnout of 20
of the most enthusiastic calculators from two states converged upon
this grand ballroom more commonly known as the Skyland Family
Restaurant in order to participate in Rd:1 of Skyland XXI. We are happy to report that the
CCC has gained two
new Experts within its ranks with the addition of new members Expert Keith
"Chucky" Eubanks (2022)
and Expert James
"Big" MacDougall (2007)! (CCC
members
got very comfortable
sitting in the padded booths
and
full
size tables and chairs while
being
catered to by
our own personal waitress, Aleka! Most
enjoyed
a generously
portioned
delicious
home
style meal for
a ridiculously
low price
($6.95!),
drank fresh
hot coffee
and
other
beverages, analyzed
on our demo board
and occasionally
monitored
the giant flat screen TV with
the sound
turned off;
open 24 hours!) In the Top Section,
the CCC's #1 player, Expert Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2065) used his own weapons
against Team Columbia Expert Keith "Chucky"
Eubanks (2022) and won with the dreaded Nimzovich Defense to lead with 1-0.
Meanwhile, the pride
of Mint
Hill,
ex-member of the NCCA
Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman
(2050) drifted into a bad
variation of the Nimzovich Defense (See Game 0936) versus Team Columbia Expert James "Big" MacDougall (2007) but miraculously saved the game
with a complicated Knight maneuver which resulted in Draw! In addition, Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1867) sacked the exchange
but pressed on to ultimately split the point with superhero Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1797). In the "B" Section, Team Columbia's Erik Murrah (1691) bested Tony "the
Tiger" Hicks (1481) to lead with 1-0.
In the "C" Section, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1536) snagged a piece and
ultimately outplayed Dr. Ron "Dutch" Breukelaar (1447) while newcomer Brandon Watson (1580) defeated
"Smokin" Corey Frazier (1234) each leading with 1-0. In the Lower Section, 82 year old chess veteran Manfred "Mann" Vees (759) snagged the Queen and
then the game from newcomer Musa Menelik (Unr) while newcomer Tommy Montero (1071) defeated Team Columbia's David Gongre (1116) each
leading with 1-0.
In
order to observe all results see "Current Crosstable"-
The
facility was
great and
everybody was happy! We hope that more players
will
join
us next Wednesday to
dine, socialize and play chess! Everyone is
welcome... Long live
the CCC!
