| The
Charlotte
Chess Club,
an Independent Affiliate of the USCF meets each Wednesday evening at 6:30pm (or as early as 5:30 for some!) at the Skyland Family Restaurant, 4544 South Blvd. Charlotte, NC (Just past Woodlawn Rd towards town on L) Charlotte, N.C. The club conducts a perpetual 5 round tournament with one round being played each Wednesday evening at 7:45pm. The time control is G90 - Entry fee is $4. ($6 for non-members) In 4 Sections: Top $50, "B", "C", Lower Free Entry next event. The Annual club membership fee is $25. (Current members receive $5 discount) The "no smoking" venue is "open 24 hours" and guarantees a private area with plenty of tables, good lighting, great food, close parking and friendly management! (The Management requests that you purchase your meal at Skyland) Join us to participate in casual play as well as USCF rated games. Your first visit is FREE! Non-members, who have visited more than once, and play off-hand games are required to pay $2. The CCC occasionally sponsors a bi-monthly 3 rd. Swiss and other special tournaments. For schedule see "Upcoming Events" In order to compete in "Tournament Competition" and join the CCC or USCF simply show up at the site. |
| Explanation
of "Weekly Tournament Competition" The CCC conducts a perpetual 5 round tournament with one round being played each Wednesday evening at 7:45pm. The time control is G90 - All players who compete in tournament competition are required to be members of the United States Chess Federation. Regardless of which round(s) one chooses to enter, a player only gets credit for the game(s) he actually plays. There is no penalty for not showing up; it is simply counted as an unplayed game. - If you're running late, call me at 704-293-4397 and I'll pair you! Skyland stays open 24 hours! |

rumor, the CCC does not "demand"
that everyone purchase their meal at Skyland. Some players rarely have
their dinner there. But, the food is so good and reasonably priced, why
wouldn't you want to?! |

A slightly lighter turnout of 11
of the most congenial calculators in the Carolinas converged upon this
think tank more commonly known as
the Skyland Family
Restaurant in order to participate in Rd:2
of Skyland X. (CCC
members got very comfortable
sitting in the padded booths
and
full size tables and chairs while
being
catered to by
a team of
friendly waitresses. Most
enjoyed a generously
portioned delicious home
style meal for
a ridiculously
low price
($5.95!),
drank fresh
hot coffee and
other
beverages, analyzed
on our demo board
and occasionally
monitored the giant flat screen TV with the sound
turned down;
open 24 hours - No Smoking!!) In the Top
Section, the pride
of  Mint Hill,
ex-member of the NCCA
Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2022) survived a lively
battle with superhero Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1720) (See Game 0857) to lead with 1.5-.5. (Our
good friend Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic, 72, recently injured his
ankle playing tennis of all things!? Get well and come back soon, Slobodan; we miss you!) In the "B" Section, Bill "Mind -weeder" Wright (1705) swapped moves
with Tony "the Tiger" Cato (1616) until the game became "locked
up" in a Drawn position. Wright now leads with 1.5-.5. In addition,  new CCC member David E. Smith (Unr) (who
played tournament chess back in the 90's) gave up a fleet of
pawns in order to force a mating position against Mr. Joshua "GTO"
Balogh (1719). In the "C" Section, Ron "Dutch" Breukelaar (1437) beat down Vincent "Sonny" Grosso (1443) to share the
lead with Travis Hatley with 1 point. In the Lower Section, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1398) outlasted Drew
"Breeze" Hayes (580) to lead with 2-0. In
order
to observe all results see "Current Crosstable"-
The
facility was
great and everybody was happy! We hope that more players
will
join
us next Wednesday to
dine, socialize and play chess! - Everyone is

Honors in Quark XIV Mint Hill, NC 12-26-09: A light post-Christmas Day turnout of 8 loyal lieutenants of the CCC resistance fighters brigade gathered at the Mint Hill Public Library in order to participate in Quark XIV. In the Top Section, the CCC sage Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1866) yielded a Draw to Ron "Dutch" Breukelaar  (1347) in Rd:1, dispatched of Josh "GTO"
Balogh (1761) in Rd:2 and
upset NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2016)
in the final round (See Game 0842) to finish =1st-2nd Place with Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1676) who defeated Joe
Shirlen (966) in Rd:1, split
the point with Fuerstman in Rd:2 and bested Breukelaar in the
final round to each collect $50. (The
Entry Fee was only $10!
The
CCC collected a total of $80
in EF's and paid out $100 in cash! It is disappointing that more
Charlotte players did not take advantage of this well run and enjoyable
event). For
