Here is the only truth:  "We are the pawns of the mysterious game of chess played by God,  who moves us,  stops us,  shifts us ahead,  and soon picks us up one after the other and gathers us in the same box of  Nothing."

"Where Does all of the Money Go?"
11 yr old Will Campbell is
2010 NC Scholastic Champion!

Greensboro, NC 2-28-10: This years event, which took place in Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, (in spite of it's high Entry Fees, hotel room rates and travel expenses), attracted a total of 449 players! Gifted 11 year old, 6th grader from Statesville Will "Gasoline" Campbell (1957) not only breezed through the field defeating last years Champion David High (Rd:5), but broke NM Michael Klein's record as the "Youngest NC Scholastic Champion" ever while doing it! For his clear 1st Place perfect 5-0 effort, Campbell has won a $1,500 college scholarship. (Hope he doesn't have to wait 7 years to receive and use it!?) Clear 2nd Place was taken by Joshua Mu (1965) of Charlotte with 4.5-.5. The K-12 U1300 Champion was Zehan Duan with 5-0. The K-8 Open Champion was Ken Chu with 4.5-.5. The K-8 U1000 Champion was C. Reid Herrera with 7-0. The K-5 Champion was Lloyd Liu with 6-1. The K-3 Champion was Sam Ferguson with 6-1. The K-1 Champion was Michael Ferguson with 7-0. Special thanks to organizer Bill DeArmey and Floor Director Tom Hales for conducting a well organized event. (Two years ago, when he was 9 years old, Campbell defeated NM LF in tournament play! Current record 1-1.) Noteworthy is the fact that the past 3 Scholastic Champions: Jonathon McNeill, David High and Will Campbell have all been active members of the Asheboro Chess Club! Campbell still has a chance to break Kit Crittenden's 1948 record of being the youngest State Champion (14) in the entire country ever! Congratulations, Will, keep up the great play!! LF

Superhero Destroys Villain; Bourque Leads Lower Section of Skyland XI
Charlotte, NC 3-10-10:  A slightly weaker turnout of 12 of the most competitive chess energumens in the Charlotte area travelled to this spring training facility more commonly known as the Skyland Family Restaurant in order to participate in Rd:2 of Skyland XI. (CCC members got very comfortable sitting in the padded booths and full size tables and chairs while being catered to by a team of friendly waitresses. Most enjoyed a generously portioned delicious home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board and occasionally monitored the giant flat screen TV with the sound turned down; open 24 hours - No Smoking!) In the Top Section, the pride of Mint Hill, ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2022) suffering from severe allergy, sneezed his way to a miserable loss (his first, but maybe not his last!) against aggressive superhero Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1720) (See Game 0866) who now leads the "B" Section with 2-0. In the "C" Section, Travis "Walton" Hatley (1442) snagged a Knight for 2 Pawns and held on to defeat Nathaniel "E's" Eerenberg (1492) while Vincent "Sonny" Grosso (1443) tamed Tony "the Tiger" Cato (1592) each with 1 point. In the Lower Section, James Bourque III (Unr) beat down Corey Frazier (1240) to lead with 2-0. In addition, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1398) Drew with Drew "Willie Mayes" Hayes (782). In order to observe all results see "Current Crosstable"-  The facility was great and everybody was happy! We hope that more players will join us next Wednesday to dine, socialize and play chess! -  Everyone is welcome... Long live the CCC! Quark XV  ?? -  LF
