North Carolina "Scholastic" Chess Assn?!
Frankie Newton Sighting!!
One of the most successful and likable players  ever to participate at the Charlotte Chess Club was Life Master Frankie Newton (2282) of Crouse, NC (just outside Lincolnton). He began playing back in the mid 80's and promptly checkmated his way to 2300! Quickly responding to my "YouTube" message, Frankie, now 37, indicated that, after a 5 year hiatus, he "would stop by and visit us at the club, soon!" Maybe we can encourage him to play!! It would be fantastic to have him back in the mix with all of our great players! We'll keep our fingers crossed! -- {Proud of our accomplishment, both Expert PMc and I share the "record for defeating Newton" 7 times! However, Newton's lifetime record versus NM LF is 57-26-7!! And, against PMc it's 62-18-7!!} LOL LF
The Sicilian Dragon lives!! The following puzzle came from my Saturday encounter with Expert Wil "Mayhem" Mahan.  Black to move, Mate in 4!!      LF

McCartney Wins Top; Lucas "B"; Abril "C"; Hartung, Trela Lower Section of Skyland 43
Charlotte, NC 4-24-13: A grand total of 30 of the most amicable chess players in the Charlotte area trekked to this parallel universe more commonly known as the Skyland Family Restaurant in order to participate in Skyland 43. (CCC members got very comfortable sitting in the padded booths and full size tables and chairs while being catered to by our own personal waitress, Cindy. Most enjoyed a generously portioned delicious home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board and monitored the giant flat screen TV with the sound turned off; open 24 hours!) In the Top Section, Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2096)

Sciacca Clear 1st Place in Top; Ianni Perfect in Lower Section of Knights Templar II
Average Rating in 10 Man Top Section 2054!!
Charlotte, NC 4-13-13:  A stronger turnout of 23 competitors from 6 cities journeyed to the Queen City in order to congregate on the 7th floor "with a view" from the Dowd "Y" and participate in Knights Templar II. This was a really great event with some exceptional players and some grreat games! In Rd:1, NM Pat "Kahn" Sciacca, Esq. (2157) arrived at a Pawn down R&P ending and offered Draw to the pride of Mint Hill, ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2019) who boldly rejected the offer and went on to lose!? However, Fuerstman bounced back with a nice Sicilian Dragon vs. Mahan (See Game 1176). In Rd:2, Sciacca tangled with Columbia, SC Expert Keith "Chuckie" Eubanks (2054) who also faltered in the end and in the final round he defeated Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2102) to finish clear 1st Place with 3-0 and collect $100. Equal 2nd-4th were 2013 NC co-Invitational Champion LM Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2315) (who was kind enough to join us and participate), Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2102) who upset Mabe in Rd:2! (See Game 1178) and Eubanks each with 2-1 winning $16.66. In the Lower Section, Curtis Ianni (1550) promptly won his first round, upset Kireet Panuganti (1788) in Rd:2 and in the final round defeated Greensboro's John Retarides (1699) to finish clear 1st Place with 3-0 and pocket $100. Equal 2nd-3rd were Eugene Tiselsky (1745) and Cary, NC's favorite son, 74 year old Stanley Fontaine (1682) each with 2.5-.5. winning $25. Equal 4th-6th in the 13 man section were Kireet Panuganti (1788), Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1356) and Sri Uppaluri (710) each with 2-1 winning $15. An exact payback of 75% was shared by almost half of the players who participated! In order to observe all results see "Crosstable." Our next Saturday event is Knights Templar III, May 25! See you there! Fuerstman directed. McCartney assisted.
