    Greetings from Charlotte N.C, USA, Earth to everyone out there in cyberspace, and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. We have finally entered the ultra modern age of instant communication. In this column, which is updated every Thursday, we will strive to report a weekly synopsis of the previous meeting to include current standings, annotated games, and other interesting anecdotes for your reading, viewing, and listening pleasure. Our goal is to eventually provide our members with a "realtime" site which will instantly produce current information about chess with the click of a mouse! We welcome your comments and contributions

Wendy's XVIII Begins

Thirty-four chancetakers abandoned their poker machines as well as theirfear of losing and vied to compete in Rd:1 of Wendy's XVIII for a chance to win $100.  In the Top Section, current CCC Champion, 16 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2070) initiated Gregory "the Mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1822) while NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) got by Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1789) for the second time in as many weeks. Also, in the Top Section, NM "WWF" Frankie Newton (2236) maintains a slight edge in an adjournment versus Patrick McCartney (1948) as does David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1866) in his adjournment against NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2151).  In the Cruiserweight Division, CCC I.O. "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1636) upset Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway (1675). In the Middle Section, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1407) manhandled David Mangis (1540) while Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1332) upset Carl McKern (1503).  In addition, "Iron" Mike Isner (1407) and Jerome "BigGuy" DeBell (1522) have adjourned against Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1475) and Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1623) respectively. In the Lower Section, wins were posted by Euphemia Mu, Daryl "Flash" Gordon, Jim "Sticks" Ulaky, Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup, Derek Smith, Anthony Smith and Stephen Welt. Newton, McCartney Share Smokehouse VII Title; Tapia Perfect in Lower Section

Twenty of the most prodigious barbeque eatin' chessplayers in the area (and beyond) competed in Smokehouse VII.  In the Top Section, NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) defeated Robert Spurrier (1934) and Ken Baxter (1968) before agreeing to a "quick" Draw with Patrick McCartney (1948) who had defeated Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1480) and Expert Justin Daniel (2070).  Each scored 2.5-.5 and collected $75. In the Lower Section, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1332) registered a perfect score and collected $100 with wins over Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1475), Stephen Welt (Unr) and Robert Caldwell (880).  Equal 2nd thru 6th were Thomas Hayes, Lauren Keller, Jim Ulaky, Nick Spurrier and Robert Caldwell each winning $10. Fuerstman directed.
