NEWS & VIEWS 12-29-11
Skyland XXX Begins -
Happy New Year!
Charlotte,
NC 12-28-11: A fantastic turnout of 29 holiday chess
revelers converged upon this festive grand
ballroom more
commonly known as the Skyland
Family Restaurant in order to
participate in Rd:1 of Skyland XXX. All club
members were graced by the visit of the Bohlin Family
from Fresno California. Both PhDs, Son
Christopher is a member of the Fresno Chess
Club where ex-CCC member and friend IM
Andrey Chumachenko (2450) now resides and
plays! (CCC members
got very comfortable
sitting
in
the
padded
booths and full size
tables and chairs while being
catered to by our own
personal waitress.
Most enjoyed a
generously portioned delicious
home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot
coffee and other
beverages, analyzed on our demo
board and monitored
the giant flat screen TV with the sound
turned off; open 24 hours!) In the Top Section, the CCC's #2
player, Expert Shawn
"Arlo" Pealer
(2108) played the White side of the Slav (what else)
versus Serbian Judge Slobodan Sinanovic (1876)
and ultimately emerged victorious while renewing
CCC
member Expert
Patrick
"Fabio" McCartney
(2044) won a Pawn
and, with only a few minutes left on both
clocks, finally the game against superhero Daryl
"Flash" Gordon (1861). Meanwhile, mild mannered
reporter for the Daily Planet Clarke
"Kent" Brosi
(1831) upset newly crowned
Expert
Will Mahan (2025) while the pride of
Spartenburg, SC David "Knox" Williams
(1900) beat down Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1808)
each leading with 1-0. In
addition, the CCC's #3 player, the pride of Mint Hill,
ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, NM Leland
"Ennui" Fuerstman
(2056) playing an
active variation of the Pirc-Robatch Defense,
sacked a couple of Pawns and launched
an ambitious counter-attack against "Wild" Bill Connell
(1881)
who, in all of the commotion,* (See Game 1006)
agreed to a Draw.
In the "B" Section,
Dr. Ron
"Dutch" Breukelaar
(1700) hunkered down and defeated Team Monroe's
Tony "the
Tiger" Cato (1552) to lead with 1-0. Meanwhile, visiting player from
Germany,
Jevgenija
Leveikina (1760) ended up in an OCB ending
and split the point with Bill "Mind-
weeder" Wright
(1687). In the "C"
Section, Team Monroe's Ian Haigler
(1508) K.O.ed "Smokin" Corey Frazier (1447)
while James
"Gaffer" Bourque
(1442) outplayed Emanuel Cooper (718) each with
1-0. In the Lower Section, Fabian "El
Flaco" Abril
(1363) again turned the tables on Manfred "Mann"
Vees (718) to lead with 1-0. In order to observe
all
results see "Current Crosstable" The
facility was great
and
everybody was happy! We hope that more
players will join us next
Wednesday to dine, socialize and play
chess!
Everyone is welcome... Long live the
CCC!

Perfect in Reserve Angel IV
Mint Hill, NC 12-17-11: Four
honored members of the CCC Royal Guard converged
upon the palatial estate of NM LF in order to participate
in Reserve
Angel IV. The $20 entry fee guaranteed 3 rounds of G75, a sandwich and the
beverage of your choice. In
Rd:1, the CCC's #3
player, the pride of Mint Hill, ex-member of the NCCA Hall of
Fame, NM
Leland
"Ennui" Fuerstman
(2056) played a rarely seen
(and risky)
variation of the Sicilian Dragon
versus "Wild" Bill Connell (1856) who traded his
Queen
for the 2 Rooks and actually whipped up a lethal
counter-attack (See Game 1002)
before running out of moves! (And you think chess
is easy?!?) Meanwhile, Slobodan
"the Judge" Sinanovic
(1894) sacked the exchange against superhero
Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1861) and prevailed in the
end. In Rd:2,
"Ennui Boy"
snagged a piece in the opening (See Game 1003)
and went on to defeat the "Judge" while "Wild Bill"
outplayed the "Superhero." In Rd:3, Fuerstman gained
a spacial advantage in the opening versus Gordon
and finally won the exchange and the game to
finish clear 1st
Place with 3-0 and
pocket $40. Clear 2nd Place
with 2-1 and winning $20 was 74 year old Judge Slobodan Sinanovic
who grabbed the exchange, traded Queens and
summarily won the ending versus Connell. In
order to observe all results, see "Crosstable."
The competition was fierce and a good time was
had by all. Fuerstman
directed. |
