"The older I grow, the more I value my pawns."  Keres
"Morphy was probably the greatest genius of them all."  Fischer
"I thinks it's almost definite that the game is a draw theoretically."  Fischer

Fuerstman Takes Top; Gordon 5-0! in "B"; Grosso "C"; Gatlin Lower Section of Skyland XI
Charlotte, NC 3-31-10:  A grand total of 20 (including a record 18 players tonight) made the journey to this mental jousting octagon more commonly known as the Skyland Family Restaurant in order to participate in Skyland XI. (CCC members got very comfortable sitting in the padded booths and full size tables and chairs while being catered to by a team of friendly waitresses. Most enjoyed a generously portioned delicious home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board and occasionally monitored the giant flat screen TV with the sound turned down; open 24 hours - No Smoking!) In the Top Section, the pride of Mint Hill, ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2022) welcomed new CCC member from Spartanburg, SC, David K. Williams (1901) with the Tal Variation of the Caro-Kann (See Game 0870) to finish clear 1st Place with 4-1. In addition, Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1742) upset Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1869). Though "technically" in the "B" Section, superhero Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1720) served up an ace against new CCC member David "Tonsorialist" Forehand (1650) to finish clear 1st Place with a perfect 5-0 which included upset wins over NM LF (2022) and Sinanovic (1869). (According to the USCF Rating Calculator, after gaining 125 points, Gordon's new rating is 1845! In addition, he earns credit for a CCC Title! and Free Entry into the next event). Meanwhile, Bill "Mindweeder" Wright (1637) outplayed Slavic "the Happy Ukrainian" Fedko (1530). In the "C" Section, Vincent "Sonny" Grasso (1443) bested Ron "Dutch" Breukelaar (1437) to finish clear 1st Place with 3-2. In the Lower Section, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1398) ended up in a "Mexican standoff" with Tony "the Tiger" Cato (1592) to finish clear 1st Place with 3-2. In addition, after being 2 pieces down, Drew "Willie Mays" Hayes (782) turned the tables on "Smokin" Corey Frazier (1240). All welcome new CCC members David Forehand and father Claude Forehand and Manfred Vees. In order to observe all results see "Current Crosstable"-  The facility was great and everybody was happy! We hope that more players will join us next Wednesday to dine, socialize and play chess! -  Everyone is welcome... Long live the CCC! Quark XV  ??
