NEWS & VIEWS 4-17-08
Wendy's
96 Begins; Upsets Abound!?!
Charlotte, NC 4-16-08: A
moderate turnout of 14 of the finest super
delegate chess players in the Metrolina area converged upon this
apolitical caucus chamber more commonly known as Wendy's in
order to participate in Rd:1
of Wendy's 96. (All
were happy to see long time CCC member 18 year old Laura Lee (1929) who
just earned a full scholarship to Duke University! Laura said she
intended to return to CCC competition soon! We were also honored by the
visit of two international chess players!)
In the Top Section, for the 2nd
time in as many tries, Expert Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (2037) was, for
the lack of another word, clobbered by Ex-Expert Michael "Bolton" Kliber (1947) while
15 year old upstart Kevin "Spacey"
Huang (1895) hung
tough after a dubious sacrifice by NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2036) (See Game 0736).
In addition, Dr. Gil
"Sherlock" Holmes (1807) had
one second remaining on his "time delay" clock (which,
of course, could be an eternity?!) before mild mannered reporter
for the Daily Planet Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1761) tipped his King each
leading with 1-0.
In the Lower Section, wins were submitted by Andrew "Lefty" Turner, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin and "Smokin" Corey Frazier each leading with 1-0. All
results may be observed on the current "Crosstable." * Our next 3 round
event is Quark VII, Saturday May 17.
The venue has changed to Best
Western Sterling Hotel - Suites, 242 E. Woodlawn Rd. Charlotte,
NC. E-mail lelandfue@yahoo.com

Willard Haigler (1471) in Rd:1 and
