Mahan Leads Top; Breukelaar "B"; Abril, Kocharyan "C"; Nichols Lower Section of Skyland 44 - 1st Prize for Top Section $50!  Plus! FREE Baklava to the first player to win! Well, what other Chess Club offers that?!!
Charlotte, NC 5-15-13: A reasonable turnout of 24 of the most active tournament chess players in the Charlotte area converged upon this palatial competition hall more commonly known as the Skyland Family Restaurant in order to participate in Rd:3 of Skyland 44. (CCC members got very comfortable sitting in the padded booths and full size tables and chairs while being catered to by our own personal waitress, Cindy. Most enjoyed a generously portioned delicious home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board and monitored the giant flat screen TV with the sound turned off; open 24 hours!) In the Top Section, Team Asheboro Expert Wil "Mayhem" Mahan (2066) got involved in a tactical melee versus Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2119) which left him with an extra piece (See Game 1190) and finally, the game, and now leads with 3-0. Mean- while, the CCC's #2 player, NM Pat "Kahn" Sciacca (2141) snagged a Queenside pawn and ultimately outplayed superhero Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1879) while the pride of Mint Hill, ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2028) defeated, but did not necessarily clobber, Expert Michael "Bolton" Kliber (2004) (See Game 1189) who overstepped the time limit in a minor piece Pawn down ending. In the "B" Section, FSC graduate Dr. Ron "Dutch" Breukelaar (1699) promptly defeated Marat Kocharyan (1489), won the "FREE Baklava," and leads with 2-0. In addition, Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1765) KO'ed "Smokin" Corey Frazier (1518). In the "C"  Section, Fabian "Flaco" Abril (1537) outplayed Debs Pedigo (1050) to share the lead with Kocharyan each with 2-1. Meanwhile, "Little" Joe Little (1461) split the point with Eric "Truth" Hartung (1184). In the Lower Section, Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1304) outplayed Mike Trott (1104) to lead with 3-0. In addition, Rajesh Ganatra (1149) took care of Manfred "Mann" Vees
"won t(668) while 10 year old FSC student Zachary Amigo (Unr) won his first USCF rated game by checkmating Rich "Alert" Trela (1203) with a lone white squared Bishop! In order to observe all results, see "Current Crosstable" The facility was great and everybody was happy! We hope more players will join us next Wednesday to dine, socialize and play one rated game of chess! Everyone is welcome. Long live the CCC!
