Sciacca Leads Top; 3 "B"; Gatlin, Nichols "C"; Mytrysak Lower Section of Skyland 46
Charlotte, NC 7-24-13: A strong turnout of 30 of the most creative calculators in the county converged upon this mental jousting arena more commonly known as the Skyland Family Restaurant in order to participate in Rd:3 of Skyland 46. (CCC members got very comfortable sitting in the padded booths and full size tables and chairs while being catered to by our own personal waitress, Cindy. Most enjoyed a generously portioned delicious home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board and monitored the giant flat screen TV with the sound turned off; open 24 hours!) In the Top Section, NM Pat "Kahn" Sciacca (2126) played his patented Leningrad Dutch Defense versus the pride of Mint Hill, Ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2001) and snapped the "d" Pawn but suffered for the remainder of the contest (See Game 1205) until the very end when the latter player, who had Queen vs. Rook, touched the Queen while in "check" and was forced to interpose it allowing Sciacca, who had 4 seconds remaining, to lead with 3-0. Meanwhile, Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2112) bounced back with a nifty win over "Wild" Bill Connell (1933) (See Game 1207) while Michael "Bolton" Kliber (1989) split the point with Mark "Steeler" Biernacki (1931). In the "B" Section, Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1672) outplayed Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1485) to share the lead with Dr. Gil "Sherlock" Holmes (1736) who upset Damon "the Omen" Smith (1807) and Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1520) who upset Dr. Ron "Dutch" Breukelaar (1732) each with 1 point. In the "C" Section, Marat Kocharyan (1564) defeated "Smokin" Corey Frazier (1479) but Nichols and Gatlin each lead with 2 points. In the Lower Section, Jason Mytrysak (1158) finally defeated Mike "Fox" Trott (1264) (See Game 1206) to lead with 2 points. In addition, Rich "Alert" Trela (1191) took out Zachary Amigo (782), Eric "Truth" Hartung (1282) polished off Rajesh Ganatra (1057) and Debs Pedigo (1142) welcomed new CCC member Ben Tarkenton (Unr) to tournament competition. In order to observe all results see "Current Crosstable." The facility was great and everybody was happy! We hope more players will join us next Wednesday to dine, socialize and play one rated game of chess! Everyone is welcome. Long live the CCC! See you Aug 3-4 at the 2013 Charlotte City Chess Championship!
Mahan Perfect in Knights Templar IV
Charlotte, NC 6-29-13: A rather light turnout of 14 of the most loyal members of the CCC royal guard journeyed to the heart of the Queen City in order to congregate on the 7th floor "with a view" from the Dowd "Y" and participate in Knights Templar IV. In the Top Section, Team Asheboro Expert Wil "Mayhem" Mahan (2130) promptly disassembled the position of Anthony Cato (1498) in Rd:1, outplayed Sulia "Brick" Mason (1934) in Rd:2 and survived a seasaw battle with Expert Shawn "P Diddy" Pealer (2149) in Rd:3 to finish clear 1st Place with 3-0, pocket $100 and enjoy an 18 point rating increase to 2148! Equal 2nd-6th were Shawn Pealer, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2033), Keith "Chucky" Eubanks (1991), Sulia Mason (1934) and Julian Billings (1379) each with 2-1 winning $10. In the Lower Section,  FSC Student Mike "Fox" Trott (1117) vanquished the field to finish clear First Place with 3-0 and collect $40. Clear 2nd Place with 2-1 was Jason Mytrysak (1236) with 2-1 winning $20. An exact payback of 75% was shared by more than half of the players who participated. In order to see all results see "Crosstable." Our next event is the 2013 Charlotte City Championship on August 3-4. See you there! Fuerstman directed.
