get old; you get old when you stop playing!"
Benjamin Franklin

Here is the only truth: "We are the
pawns of the mysterious game of chess played by God, who moves
us, stops us, shifts us ahead, and soon picks us up
one after the other and gathers us in the same box of Nothing."
Omar Khayyam 1040 ad

"Chess grips its exponent,
shackling the mind and brain so that the inner freedom and independence
of even the strongest character cannot remain unaffected."
Albert

"Imagination does not breed insanity.
Exactly what does breed insanity is reason. Poets do not go
mad; but chess-players do".
—Chesterton, The Maniac
(1908).

"Talent is
doing easily what is
difficult for others, but genius
is doing what is impossible
for talent" Amiel

"the chess
playing of a master ties him to the game, fetters his mind and shapes
it to a certain extent so that his internal freedom and ease, no matter
how strong he is, must inevitably be affected." Spinoza |

moves." Horowitz
|
"The older I grow, the more I value my
pawns." Keres

NEWS & VIEWS 7-30-09
Fuerstman Takes
Top; Gordon "B"; Balogh "C", M. Biernacki Lower Section
of Skyland IV
Charlotte, NC 7-29-09: A
grand total of 18 of the
most contented chess players in the Charlotte
area converged upon this think tank more
commonly known as
the Skyland
Family Restaurant, in order to participate in Skyland
IV. (CCC
members got very comfortable
sitting in the padded booths
and
full size tables and chairs while being catered to by a team of
friendly waitresses. Most enjoyed a generously
portioned delicious home
style meal for a ridiculously
low price ($5.95!),
drank fresh hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board
and occasionally
monitored the giant flat screen TV with the sound
turned down;
open 24 hours!!) In the Top Section,
the CCC's #3 player, the pride of Mint
Hill, NM Leland "Ennui"
Fuerstman (2005) snapped a Pawn out of the opening but was only able to Draw
(See
Game 0810) against the extra ordinary endgame technique of Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1840). Fuerstman finished clear 1st Place with 4-1 winning $50! In the "C" Section, upstart Josh "GTO" Balogh
(1587) squeezed a time
trouble win out of an OCB ending versus Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1687) to
take clear 1st Place with 4-1 and win Free Entry into Skyland V. (the
CCC's Favorite Son Josh "GTO" Balogh administered a taste of his own
medicine on Tuesday evening against the good Dr. Gilbert Holmes (1828) (See Game 0811). In addition,
returnee to CCC competition Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1524) beat down
Winfred
"Guns" Gatlin (1544). In the Lower
Section, Mark "the Bomb" Biernacki (1265) bested Joe Shirlen
(1050) to take clear 1st Place
with 3-0.
In
order to observe all results see "Current
Crosstable" - The
facility was great and everybody was happy! We hope that more players
will
join us next Wednesday to
dine, socialize and play chess!) - Everyone is
welcome... Long live
the CCC! -
