Skyland I Begins With An Excellent Turnout! - Long Live the CCC!!
Charlotte, NC 3-18-09:  A strong turnout of 24 of the happiest, smartest and most talented chessplayers in the Metrolina area congregated in the private area of our brand new location, the Skyland Family Restaurant, in order to participate in Rd:1 of Skyland I. (CCC members got very  comfortable sitting in the padded booths and full size tables and chairs while being catered to by a team of friendly waitresses. Most enjoyed a generously portioned delicious home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6!), drank fresh hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board and occasionally monitored the giant flat screen TV with the sound turned down. Not to cast any aspersion on our previous facility, but the food is excellent and much cheaper at Skyland, the location is far better and the place stays open 24 hours!! In fact, when I left at 11pm, NM John Lane was still going strong taking on all comers in speed chess! This facility is absolutely perfect for the CCC! Hey, why not join us next week and find out for yourself?!) In the Top Section, the CCC's #4 player, the pride of Mint Hill, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2011) successfully snagged a Pawn and ultimately won the ending against the Kings Indian Attack of Gary "Sandbagger" Branton (1921) (See Game 0785) to lead with 1-0. Meanwhile, North Carolina chess icon NM John "Night Train" Lane (2089) returned to tournament competition brandishing the White side of his patented Ruy Lopez but graciously yielded a Draw to a stubborn "73 year old" Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1807) as did Asheboro promoter and NCCA President Tom "Terrific" Hales (1804) to Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1619). In the "B" Section, Jerome "Cookiemonster" DeBell (1632) defeated Team Asheboro's Ricky Upchurch (1422) to lead with 1-0. In the "C" Section, Octavius "0-0" Obey (1560) hung tough against Nathaniel "E's" Eerenberg (1528), new member Vincent Grosso (Unr) beat down Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1451) and new member Josh Balogh (Unr) handled newcomer Philip Brent (Unr) to each lead with 1-0. In the Lower Section, wins were turned in by "Smokin" Corey Frazier, David "Crash" Collins, Vadims "the Mad Latvian" Mudrovs and Hassan Hashemloo each leading with 1-0. In order to observe all results see "Current Crosstable"  - The facility was great and everybody was happy! Mabe Perfect in Quark X
Charlotte, NC 2-14-09:  A grand total of 7 of the most amiable chessplayers in the Metrolina area converged upon the Mint Hill Public Library in order to participate in Quark X. In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2281) defeated David Stamper (1850) in Rd:1, Lucas Hausrath (1237) in Rd:2 and NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2011) in the final round (See Game 0780) to score a perfect 3-0 and pocket $70. Equal 2nd-4th were Fuerstman, Stamper and Joshua Turner each with 2-1 winning $12. To observe all results see complete "Crosstable."
